Our People

The Arohanui Hospice inter-disciplinary team is made up of a range of health professionals, support staff and volunteers who work together to provide a 24-hour service.

Clinical

In addition to providing specialist palliative care services, the clinical team has an important role in providing guidance and support to general practice teams and other health professionals working in the community. The clinical team includes palliative care specialists, medical officers, registered and enrolled nurses (inpatient and community), district nurses, a pharmacist and care assistants who provide care to patients in the inpatient unit, as well as those in the community.

Allied Health

Within the clinical team is the allied health team who also provide services to patients, families/whānau. Registered social workers offer personal and practical support for patients and their families/whānau providing a wide range of assessment, brokerage, advocacy and counselling services. The pastoral support chaplain provides pastoral support to patients and their families/whānau primarily in the inpatient unit and also in the community. A bereavement support programme is a major part of the support and services. The day stay service is an activity-based programme located at Arohanui Hospice and Levin that offers day respite for patients, companionship and support, and opportunities to engage in meaningful activities and experiences. It also incorporates a biography service and includes aromatherapy and hairdressing.

Palliative Care Co-ordinators

Reflecting Arohanui Hospice’s strong community focus, palliative care coordinators (PCC), who are registered nurses, work in the community to support patients and their families/whānau. They work closely with Arohanui Hospice staff providing a 24-hour advice service, district nurses and general practice teams. The role of the PCC is multi-disciplinary assessment of a patient and co-ordinating a patient’s ongoing palliative care needs in collaboration with other health care providers.

Education and Research

The Education and Research Unit leads and facilitates palliative care education of generalists, in particular, but also specialist education needs. The palliative care nurse educator works with community partners to enhance knowledge of the generalist teams so that the palliative care needs of patients are met regardless of their care setting or diagnosis.

In addition, the unit has been the centre for two significant end-of-life research projects; the LCP (a national initiative) and OPCARE9 (a European Union initiative).

Hospital Palliative Care Team

The hospital palliative care team (HPCT) based at Palmerston North Hospital, is supported by, and integrated into, Arohanui Hospice via a memorandum of understanding with MidCentral DHB. The HPCT is an advisory service within the hospital that supports staff to meet the palliative care needs of patients and their families/whānau.

Volunteers

Arohanui Hospice is supported by a team of over 500 volunteers. Volunteers play an essential role in the daily running of the Hospice, performing most of the domestic tasks. They assist in providing the day stay programmes, at the quarterly memorial service and are available for other support roles. Volunteers contribute greatly in the effective running of the Arohanui Hospice retail shop.

Support Staff

The support staff at Arohanui Hospice are vital to the smooth running of the organisation and contributing to meeting the needs of patients and their family/whānau. The team includes clinical support, reception, clinical typing, quality assurance, general administrative support, IT support, fundraising, and the kitchen team who provide quality meals tailored to patients’ needs.
