Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient Reflective Data Cycle
The Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) is an evidence-based document, developed with the aim of guiding the care of the dying patient and their family/whanau.
The LCP provides an opportunity to continuously improve quality of care using the ‘LCP Reflective Data Cycle’ (Taylor, 2005).
Aim
To provide locally driven continuous quality improvement for the dying and their families/whanau.
How
For the “LCP Reflective Data Cycle” to be completed six monthly within each implementing area.
Who
LCP resource nurses and/or administration staff – with support from their manager and training/ education from the LCP Facilitator and/or National LCP Office Administrator.
Resources
Time – dependent on amount of data. Access to computer. Skills, training and education.

Opportunities
LCP Resource Nurses and LCP Facilitators will have the opportunity to develop skills in, and be part of:
- Data inputting
- Data analysis
- Action planning
Outcomes
It is recommended that a sample of LCPs be analysed locally, leading to locally driven action plans, which will be fed back to the LCP Resource group with the aim of providing continuous quality improvement for the dying and their families/whanau.
Future Development
The National LCP Office – NZ is working toward the development of a national database to facilitate LCP data collection as a means of benchmarking end-of-life care across NZ.
For more information, please contact Theresa MacKenzie, National LCP Lead – NZ or Joanne Giesen, National LCP Office Administrator.
