    Story of a Hospice 1991-2016

Hospice care was a foreign concept to many New Zealanders when Arohanui Hospice’s founders began their campaign for a better deal for the terminally ill back in 1983.

People were hesitant to talk openly about death and dying, despite the process being an inevitable consequence of being alive.

It was a challenge to market the idea of moving care of the dying from busy hospital wards to an environment where quality, holistic care could be provided in a way that respected patients’ dignity and included their families.

Those pioneers worked hard to engage the community, medical profession and health managers in their vision, and to raise money for a facility and a service that would be delivered free of charge.

Since Arohanui Hospice opened in May, 1991, it has evolved from a rather quaint cottage-style hospice into a large, multi-disciplinary service reaching out into the community.

By 2016 it was providing specialist palliative care for approximately 250 patients at a time in Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua and Rangitikei, assisting more than 800 patients and their family/whanau a year.

Community support, volunteers and fundraising have all played a huge part in the growth of this service. What was once a ‘dream’ is now an essential service, one which is predicted to grow into the future.

    Between Rivers

    Between Rivers the Manawatu
By David Lupton & Bettina Anderson

Between Rivers is a beautiful photographic pictorial book which showcases the Manawatu and Rangitikei region like no other.

“The book is part monument, part pictorial tribute to the many journeyers who, over the generations, have engraved their marks upon the landscape of our home- the Manawatu…The visual journey herein is our Manawatu a linear mosaic of ideas matched with images rendered from the air and grounded against those taken via car – each shot no more than a few metres from the roadside. You too can get behind the wheel, pick a spot on the map between the threads of the Rangitikei and the Manawatu, and ride into the place of memories captured here.” David Lupton and Bettina Anderson

A simply stunning coffee table book, this is the perfect gift for those that live in the Manawatu and Rangitikei regions or for family or friends that live overseas. The pictorial collection showcases the true beauty that our region has to offer.

Books have a retail price of $80.00, of which Arohanui Hospice receives $20.00 to go towards our annual fundraising programme. Postage and packaging is $15.00.
