Home Support
Arohanui aims, where possible, to enable patients to continue to live at home. Our team of specialist nurses, called Palliative Care Co-ordinators, monitor and support our community-based patients, maintaining close links with others involved, such as general practices and district nurses.

Inpatient Care
Arohanui has a 10 bed purpose-built unit in Palmerston North. Patients are usually admitted to receive treatment for distressing symptoms or for respite care to give their families or caregivers a break. Two beds are also available for day patients. The inpatient unit is the base for Arohanui’s interdisciplinary team.

24hr Advice
A Registered Nurse is available 24 hour a day to offer support and advice over the phone to either patients, families or other health professionals. They will contact a doctor or district nurse if needed.

Hospital-based Support
For hospital patients with palliative care needs, Arohanui has set up in partnership with MidCentral Health a Hospital Palliative care Team. This doctor and nurse team at Palmerston North Hospital can offer advice on relief of symptoms, plan discharge home, or arrange transfer to Arohanui Hospice if appropriate.

Day Stay
Arohanui welcomes patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays to their Day Stay programme. Day Stay offers opportunities to rediscover creative skills, try some new activities, and relax in the company of other patients with the support of staff and volunteers. Lunch and a tipple from the drinks trolley are provided.

Outpatient Clinics
To enable specialist follow up after their initial assessment with our medical staff, patients can be seen at our outpatient clinic. The patient’s general practitioner will be kept informed of the outcome of these consultations.

Bereavement Support
There is an active Bereavement Support team at Arohanui that provides support for any person, of any age who has suffered the loss of a significant person in their lives. The team is available to provide access to resources to help those who are grieving as they experience difficult times in their journey and encouragement to travel this road in their own way and in their own time.
