Levin Hospice Shop Manager

Levin Hospice Shop Manager | 40 Hours per week | $32 - 33 per hour

Established in 1991, Arohanui Hospice provides specialist palliative care and support to people living with life-limiting illnesses, and their whānau, across Manawatū, Tararua, Horowhenua and Rangitīkei.

Our name, Arohanui“with much love” — sits at the heart of everything we do. While our care is provided free of charge, it costs millions of dollars each year to deliver. Our Hospice Shops play an essential role in raising the funds that make this care possible.

We are looking for an experienced and capable Shop Manager to lead our busy Levin Hospice Shop.

This is a significant people and operational management role within a large, fast-paced retail environment. You will lead a team of employees and volunteers working across multiple departments and functions, while ensuring the shop is commercially successful, well organised, safe and welcoming.

Our donors are at the heart of our retail operation. Every item entrusted to us is an act of generosity and an opportunity to support Hospice care. A key part of this role is ensuring donors receive a consistently warm, respectful and appreciative experience, and understand the difference their support makes for people and whānau in our community.

No two days will be the same. One moment you may be coaching a team member or coordinating volunteer coverage, and the next you could be reviewing sales performance, resolving an operational issue, managing the flow of donated goods or connecting with a local business or community group.

If you are an experienced retail manager who thrives on variety, enjoys bringing out the best in people and wants your work to make a genuine difference, we would love to hear from you.

About the role

As Shop Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the people, operations and performance of the Levin store, which operates seven days a week.

You will:

  • Lead, support and coordinate a diverse team of employees and volunteers
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of multiple retail and processing areas
  • Create a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture
  • Coach and develop people, set clear expectations and confidently manage performance
  • Manage staffing, volunteer coverage, workflow and competing daily priorities
  • Drive sales, meet budgets and identify opportunities for sustainable growth
  • Ensure donated goods are efficiently received, sorted, priced and presented
  • Create a consistently warm and appreciative experience for people donating goods to the shop
  • Embed a culture of donor gratitude, ensuring every donor feels acknowledged and understands the value of their contribution
  • Maintain high standards of merchandising, customer service and store presentation
  • Manage POS processes, cash handling, stock movement and operational controls
  • Maintain a safe, well-organised and compliant working environment
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, donors, volunteers, local businesses, community groups and other partners
  • Actively promote the importance of Hospice services and the many ways people can support them through our retail operations
  • Strengthen the shop’s visibility and connection within the Horowhenua community
  • Work collaboratively with our wider Hospice retail network and organisational teams

About you

You will be an experienced retail leader who is equally comfortable managing people, performance, relationships and complex day-to-day operations.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Proven experience managing a busy retail operation, preferably with multiple departments or work areas
  • Strong people leadership experience, including coaching, communication, development and performance management
  • The ability to lead a mixed workforce of employees and volunteers
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience working with budgets, sales targets and performance measures
  • A strong understanding of customer and donor experience, with the ability to create a culture of genuine gratitude and care
  • The confidence and interpersonal skills to build meaningful relationships throughout the local community
  • The ability to represent Arohanui Hospice positively and communicate the impact of community support
  • Excellent planning, organisational and problem-solving skills
  • The confidence to make decisions and respond calmly when priorities change
  • A practical, hands-on leadership style and willingness to step in wherever needed
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office, POS systems and cash-handling processes
  • A genuine connection with our purpose and the contribution our Hospice Shops make to local care

This is a full-time position working 40 hours across five days each week. Some flexibility will be required to meet the operational needs of this seven-day retail operation.
